The Singapore MICE Sustainability Certification (MSC) was launched on 24 January 2024 to equip and certify businesses for adopting sustainable practices in events and raise sustainability standards across Singapore’s Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions (MICE) industry.

Developed by SACEOS, with support from Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and in consultation with members and industry players, the Singapore MSC is a well-recognised initiative with a new framework that aims to reinforce Singapore’s position as a leading sustainable MICE destination.

Applicable across the MICE industry which includes event organisers, stand builders, venues (including hotels with MICE venues), food and beverage caterers, transport operators, freight forwarders, and event technology and audio visual providers, the Singapore MSC framework covers the management approach to Carbon, Waste, Energy, Water management, Social, Human resource competency and Procurement

WA 3:2022 Sustainable MICE – Guidelines for waste management and WA 4:2023 Sustainable MICE – Guidelines for carbon emissions management are not included in the price of the quotation.  Companies are advised to purchase their own copies of the WA3 ($25.90) and WA4 ($36.10) Guidelines.

The Singapore MSC is a locally recognised certification certifying companies in MICE at the organisational level on environment, economic and social aspects of sustainability. The framework covers the management approach, carbon, waste, energy, and water management, social and human resource competency, and procurement.

The Singapore MSC is a scheme for event organisers, stand builders, venues (including hotels with MICE venues), food and beverage caterers, transport operators, freight forwarders, and event technology and audio visual provider.

Members or non-members of SACEOS, and those outside Singapore may register their interest via the Singapore MSC Interest Form here.

The Singapore MSC enables organisations to establish sustainability policy and initiatives to meet the Singapore Green Plan 2030’s goal and Net Zero emissions by 2050. The Singapore MSC helps organisations to grasp more business opportunities in the near future where sustainability will be a key consideration.

Organisations to submit relevant evidence and documents to the appointed certification body and undergo an audit process to comply with at least 80% of the clauses for their sector to attain the level of certification applied for.

The Singapore MSC is aligned with both local and internationally recognised MICE-related sustainability frameworks and regulations, including GSTC, EIC, ISO, WA3 on Waste and WA4 on Carbon.

The Singapore MSC is valid for a period of 2 years. The current price for recertification is equivalent to the current price for certification. Grant funding is excluded for recertification.

Sectors refers to the core business of the organisation e.g., a venue that is also a food caterer means they could apply for certification in 2 sectors. The 7 MICE sectors covered in the MSC are: Event Organiser, Venue, Stand Builder, Food & Beverage Caterer, Freight Forwarder, Event Tech & AV Provider and Transport Operator.

Organisations may check their eligibility to apply for grant funding on a reimbursement basis on the Business Grants Portal (BGP) for funding support of up to 70% based on predefined percentages for SMEs and non-SMEs.

Workforce Singapore’s Career Conversion Programme for Tourism Professionals supports the reskilling of new and existing workers in emerging skills, such as sustainability, to take on growth job roles with long-term good career prospects for progression. Employees identified by MICE employers to champion the MICE Sustainability Certification journey will likely see an expansion of sustainability-related responsibilities in their job scope, for example Implementing and Establishing organisational sustainability plans and management systems, Integrating Operational Sustainability across various departments and Measurement and Reporting on energy, water, waste, and carbon related metrics.  As such, MICE employers can seek 3-6 months funding support while the employees undergo training to take on the expanded job scope:

  • 70% of monthly salary, capped at $5,000 for locals <40 years old
  • 90% of monthly salary, capped at $7,500 for locals ≥40 years old, or previously unemployed ≥6 months
